I am trying to spec out a CCTV system based on an 8 camera Intellex management system. I do not have the exact system number available but it appears it is only the monitor and drive/recorder with 4.0 software. I am listing the cameras as a seperate item (I assume they do not come with the management system) and cables (not sure what the best cable is); what else would I need; i.e: connectors, camera hangers, etc.?

Dwayne, please find my answers below!

I am trying to spec out a CCTV system based on an 8 camera Intellex management system. I do not have the exact system number available but it appears it is only the monitor and drive/recorder with 4.0 software.

Your basic Intellex system comes with the Intellex Recorder, standard computer LCD monitor (optional and you can order whatever size you want and the 15" LCD size is standard), keyboard and mouse. Intellex system is based on WinTel solution (Windows and Intel), therefore you can consider it as a basic computer with some special application (Intellex) running in the background.

I am listing the cameras as a seperate item (I assume they do not come with the management system) and cables (not sure what the best cable is); what else would I need; i.e: connectors, camera hangers, etc.?

All the rest of the hardware are optional and you have many choices. All the cameras (minidomes, domes or fixed cameras), the lenses, the mounting hardware, the cables, the connectors are separate.

Do not go cheap on the cables - you have the choice between good quality Siamese cable (containing RG-59 cable and separate 18/2 power cable) or go with CAT6 (my preference) with passive baluns.

If you need help to put this proposal together, let me know and I can prepare it for you.

Many thanks - is there any picture quality loss using the baluns? I picked up some of these and they look like the way to go; much easier to run and probably less expensive than coax. I understand they allow not run the camera signal but also provide power to the camera. Would the length of line run limit the power or picture quality? The furthest run I should have would be just under 200 feet.

No. Actually we run CAT6 cables as far as 1,500' and the picture quality was fine. It starts degrading after 1,500'. If needed, you can go with Active baluns for much further distances.

I will recommend VU passive baluns. They are very well built and very cost effective. Just in case, here is a url for these baluns:

I take it that you are referring to either CAT5 or CAT6 cable right? If so, they are much cheaper. Just buy the best quality cables possible. This way when you are ready to go to IP solution, then you can reuse the same cables.

I understand they allow not run the camera signal but also provide power to the camera.

If you are referring to CAT5 or CAT6 cables, then yes you can. Use one of the pairs for power and another pair for video signal and have spare pairs for the future use.

Would the length of line run limit the power or picture quality? The furthest run I should have would be just under 200 feet.

200' will be fine. What I will recommend to be on the safe side, double up on the pairs of the cable. Combine two pairs and this way you will be fine.

Dwayne, another url that will be very helpful for you is this one:

http://intellex.us

This website contains "everything" Intellex. You can find a lot of info, solutions, training courses, etc... therefore, use it at your leisure and if there are any questions on your Intellex system, please let us know.
