The cameras will shout warning messages to people dropping litter or involved in anti-social behaviour.

Staff will monitor the cameras from a control room. When they see an offence being committed they can either play a pre-recorded message, or scold the people involved via loudspeaker.

It's part of a government backed scheme which will see 21 places across the country installing the new technology.

Residents will also get messages reminding them to keep their valuables safe, and telling them their behaviour is being monitored.

Councillor Val Rush said: "The talking CCTV cameras will help...our streets feel safer and make people feel less vulnerable when they are out and about in the borough.

Crime in the borough is already falling faster than the London average, and this new technology...will no doubt help us lower our crime rate even further."

Southwark in South London is to get their talking CCTV up and running later this year.
